Actions for Retailers
“It’s really important that we give the correct advice and information to our retail customers, many of whom are now asking about peat free growing media.”
Simon Blackhurst, Growing Media Expert
As peat containing growing media for amateur gardeners will likely be banned across the UK, why not get ahead and try peat free alternatives? There are a lot of great products already on the market.
You will start to see the Responsible Sourcing Scheme logo on bags of growing media. There is a QR code taking you to the RSS website with lots of information on the way the industry is scoring each product.
You can point customers in the direction of our website where there are lots of hints and tips.
Enrich the Earth will be creating point of sale information in the coming months, contact us to find out more.
The Horticultural Trade Association (HTA) also offers lots of resources and support for our industry.
Positive findings so far with peat free growing media:
The dryer surface reduces Liverwort
There is less algae growth
Plants are showing better growth than in peat-based media
We’re seeing excellent root establishment
Increased aeration reduces the likelihood of fungus gnats
POS trials
We are currently trialling informative Point of Sales material for customers at 3 different garden centres in the North East of England. These resources are designed to take the burden off busy garden centre staff, and allow customers to make their own, more informed choices about what they need.
