Changing Policy
A growing coalition of influential organisations is seeking to reduce our reliance on fertilisers whilst improving soils, reducing emissions and providing alternatives to peat. We believe this can be delivered by taking a more circular approach which maximises the resources we have available in the UK.
With millions more tonnes a year of organic waste due to be collected from businesses in 2025 and households in 2026, this material represents vital nutrients which farmers and growers are crying out to be returned to the land in the most effective manner.
Alongside measures to redistribute surplus food and reduce the levels of waste entering the system, Government action in this area can deliver meaningful progress in enhancing our food security and would represent a clear success story in delivering growth through a circular economy.
We have worked to secure cross-sector support for a plan which would help ensure the greatest economic and environmental benefits from this opportunity, with the potential to double national compost production.
