Supporting Community Gardens

Thanks to support from the Garfield Weston Foundation, Enrich the Earth has helped five Community Gardens promote composting within their local community. These include:

Scotswood Natural Community Garden

Our first installation is in Scotswood Community Garden. The garden has been in existence for over 30 years, in one of the most deprived areas of Newcastle. The garden has a strong management committee and offers a range of courses to the local area, including Forest school, forest school teacher training, Food growing and cooking – but nothing on composting. The garden works with older people (The Elderberrries); schools; refugees; Mental Health, disability and domestic violence support groups. Two of Scotswood Gardens staff attended our first Master Composter training course and have hosted visits by other community gardens, who want to learn from the experiences of a long standing organisation.

The Comfrey Project

The Comfrey Project works with refugees and has hosted several of our training sessions for other Compost Demonstration gardens.

Crook Hall Gardens

Crook Hall Gardens is a National Trust site based in Durham City centre. The senior gardener is a keen advocate of composting and intends to train all 55 volunteers at the site, to the same composting standard. The site has fully embraced the concept of the Demo garden and has incorporated bins throughout it’s beautiful gardens. Crook Hall has also hosted several of our Master Composter training sessions including a session to train five staff from Durham County Council community action team, which gave them the knowledge to talk to residents about composting options.

Cramlington Coronation Gardens

Cramlington Coronation Gardens is a new Demonstration site. The garden site will be handed to a community group when the development is complete. The project is currently managed by Cramlington Town Council, who have a network of seven community gardens. CTC have fully supported the delivery of Master Composting training.
