Contamination in garden and food waste costs the UK over £50 million a year.

And that’s just in disposal costs.

Where does your garden waste go?

Is Durham County Council collecting your Garden Waste?

  • Thanks for signing up! You’re helping the planet a lot by composting locally. You can help even more by making sure your garden waste is litter and plastic free.

  • You can subscribe for garden waste collection via the Durham County Council website.

After signing up, the council will send you:

    • a sticker for your bin

    • a calendar for your bin collection days

    • a new garden waste bin, if you need it.

    Sign up here.

  • If you don’t need a regular garden waste collection or don’t want to pay, that’s ok! You can still help out by making sure your other waste and recycling is sorted properly. There are other ways to recycle your garden waste too: Check your council’s website for more information.

You can also compost at home or in your community: check our composting guide to find out more.

  • Check to see whether your local council collects food and garden waste. If your council doesn’t collect garden or food waste, don’t worry!
